... one day I invited him for a conversation, but he was a bit hesitant. The thing is, I tend to be more of an interrogator than a conversationalist; so, I understood his discomfort, but we had to start somewhere.
All I wanted was to understand how he felt about his situation.
Not surprisingly, he was distressed, and he felt that he was letting the family down. That is not an easy load to carry.
He wanted so dearly to study Interior Design,
Me: Ok, so why don't you?
Kago: I have no money.
Me: Why not?
Kago: (after a long silence) I don't have a job.
Me: Ok, why not?
I could tell that he expected me to understand that he could not do much with a form 5 certificate. That seems to be the general thinking.
I didn't really care about his certificate. As far as I was concerned, his certificate only attested to the fact that at some point in his life he satisfied the conditions necessary for the awarding of the certificate. Beyond that he remained in control.
Regardless of what his BGCSE results were, he was still in charge of his space. Each day he made choices, and the choices affected his experiences. We needed to talk about that.
